Located in Rensselaer County, the Empowerment Exchange is a peer support program dedicated to offering strategies that will encourage people to find their personal power and use their own unique voice. As current or former recipients of mental health services, we believe that recovery is possible for everyone. At the heart of our work is the hope that people can reclaim their life and their independence.

The Empowerment Exchange Offers:

COMMUNITY CONNECTOR PROGRAM

  • The Empowerment Exchange offers individualized peer-to-peer outreach and support to individuals who may find it difficult to reach out and connect to their neighbors and members of their communities.
  • We provide supportive assistance as a person increases their use of community facilities and resources.

INDIVIDUAL ADVOCACY SERVICES

  • The Empowerment Exchange offers individualized advocacy and support services to help a person learn and protect their rights and interests.
  • Our staff will assist individuals as they work through system processes and procedures: researching information, preparing documents, role-playing situations, attending meetings as needed.

INFORMATION, TRAINING, AND SKILL-BUILDING ACTIVITIES

  • The Empowerment Exchange offers monthly self-help and empowerment seminars featuring guest speakers designed to assist people in recovery to find and connect with their personal power and the power of self-help.
  • We maintain a library and resource room, which provides information related to self-help, mutual support, rights, natural community supports and alternatives.
  • The Empowerment Exchange provides technical assistance and training to develop, support and maintain self-help groups and activities that promote wellness, recovery and self-determination.

SYSTEMS ADVOCACY SERVICES

  • Our systems advocacy services cultivate, nurture and support peer support activities throughout the cities of Rensselaer and Hoosick Falls through outreach, engagement and community organizing strategies.
  • The Empowerment Center identifies, cultivates and supports systems advocacy in Rensselaer County by mentoring people who use mental health services to have an impact on policy development, planning and implementation of new initiatives.

PEER SUPPORT LINE

  • The Empowerment Exchange hosts a confidential, non-crisis support line that is operated by individuals in all stages of recovery who offer hope and strength to others who may be experiencing a variety of feelings including fear, grief, sadness, anger, anxiety, or loneliness.
  • The line is open during the hours of: Monday-Saturday, 9:00 AM-9:00 PM.
  • It is a place where you can talk about a problem, a plan or a success, and find information about community resources.
