Welcome to Mental Health Empowerment Project, Inc. (MHEP)! We are a recipient run, not-for-profit corporation organized in 1988 to develop and strengthen self-help and mutual support/recovery activities throughout the United States.
Our agency was founded as a community action effort to organize people like us, who had been in the mental health system, to claim or reclaim their lives. Our lived experience also demonstrates that through the power of mutual support, people can move from being in a state of hopelessness to finding personal satisfaction, connectedness, and a new purpose in life. We achieve this by introducing people to self-directed recovery tools that can increase mastery over physical, spiritual and emotional health, increasing “valued life experiences” by supporting community presence, participation and contribution and assisting people to find their own unique voice and connect to their personal power.
As a multi service agency, MHEP proudly offers:
- State-wide Skill Building Workshops for people who use mental health services
- Technical Assistance to Consumer Operated Agencies Throughout New York State
- Community Inclusion
- Peer Support Workforce Development Throughout New York State
- Direct Peer Support Services in Albany, Rensselaer and Westchester Counties
As people who have been given a psychiatric diagnosis, the staff of MHEP especially enjoys mentoring others to give back to each other and become active members of their communities. Please join us in our mission of making a positive difference in the lives of our peers.
